Sometimes, dogs face tough battles and hardships – the kind that may make people want to give up. But dogs are very resilient creatures, and they always do their best to survive.
A three-year-old Chihuahua named Eric suffered from cancer that endangered his life. But after undergoing lots of chemotherapy sessions, he was finally cancer-free. This only shows that the smallest dogs are sometimes the toughest!
Eric’s suffering
When the adorable Chihuahua arrived at the San Diego Humane Society earlier this year, he was covered in lots of ticks. There was even blood on his feet. The vets and specialists at the Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine examined Eric, and they found out that he had a cancerous tumor called Transmissible Venereal Tumor (TVT). What made his case much more challenging was his tick-borne disease known as Ehrlichiosis.
After a week in the shelter’s care, the medical team commenced Eric’s first chemotherapy session. For him to be safe, the pup was sedated during each treatment. The vets also worked hard to get rid of the dog’s tick-borne disease.
Erick has beaten cancer
Because Eric’s conditions required months of treatment, a dedicated foster family had to take him in. The said family was tasked to take the dog to the clinic for regular medical appointments as he recovered.
After four months and close to 20 rounds of chemotherapy, Eric was finally free of cancer. Everyone who took care of him was thrilled to see that he was already healthy and strong. The brave Chihuahua is now ready for adoption.
To celebrate Eric’s healing, the veterinarians, specialists, and volunteers held a small party for him. He received a small doggy cake with a card that rejoiced his freedom from cancer. In one of the pictures below, you will see that Eric has a kerchief that says that he is now a chemo grad. So cute!
