Life in a dog rescue shelter is never easy. Most of the dogs in dog shelters have been neglected and sometimes abused by their previous owners. Many of which have never known love from a human before.
One family in Australia decided to give rescue dogs a chance to live a happy life by adopting a dog rather than shopping for one. And they chose a neglected and abused Doberman named Khan. Much like Pitbulls, Dobermans are given a bad reputation and are usually less likely to be adopted than other breeds.
Though the Svilicic family knew that Khan lived a life of neglect and abuse, they weren’t worried about introducing him to their 17-month-old daughter, Charlotte. Despite being a big dog, Khan seemed friendly.
Introducing kids and dogs always pose a risk, even when the dog is not from a rescue shelter. Dogs can easily spook, and when they are not comfortable, they can harm the people around them, even their owners.
Four days after having adopted Khan, all was well until one fateful afternoon when Khan suddenly became aggressive. Charlotte and Khan were out in their yard one afternoon when Khan started snarling and acting aggressively. Catherine, Charlotte’s mom, was inside the house when it happened.
They’ve only gotten Khan for four days, and it seemed like he was hiding his aggressive side until that one afternoon. Khan aggressively pushed Charlotte to the ground. Catherine came rushing out to save Charlotte from Khan’s aggression when Khan grabbed the toddler by her nappy and swung her over his shoulder. Charlotte was thrown more than a meter from Khan.
Catherine was horrified by what she just witnessed, but when she realized what had happened, she knew getting Khan was not a mistake. Just when Catherine was about to pick up Charlotte from the ground, she heard Khan scream from pain.
She realized that Khan had thrown Charlotte away because he was trying to protect her from a poisonous King Brown snake! The snake managed to bite Khan, and despite his wounds and the venom coursing through his body, he was still trying to keep the snake away from his family.
Moments later, Khan dropped lifeless as the snake’s myotoxic venom paralyzed him. Catherine rushed Khan to a vet clinic where the heroic dog was given an anti-venom shot. Miraculously, Khan recovered days later, and Catherine was overjoyed that her family, including Khan, are out of danger.
