Dogs are more than just companions. Time and again, they prove that they can very well be our protectors. Dogs have been a great help to humans in many different ways, but one of the most important help we get from them is their ability to save lives using their snouts. Pups are naturally very good at sniffing things, but when trained, they can do even better.
A K-9 named Maverick recently proved this when he saved an elderly lady who had gone missing. The elderly woman was from a nursing home in New York. Her phone, keys, and purse were left in the complex, but she was nowhere to be seen. Understandably this got her caretakers worried.
The woman’s daughter alerted the police about her missing mom the next afternoon, but it has already been hours since they last saw her. Officer Thomas was quick to respond and arrive at the nursing home, but he didn’t come alone; he brought his secret weapon. His loyal partner, K-9 Maverick, who was ‘in charge’ of the search.
Maverick had been trained to sniff out explosives, narcotics, and people, so officer Thomas was very confident that his pup would get the job done. And true to his expectations, the German shepherd found the missing elderly woman in a nearby forest. It only took the 5-year-old pup 10 minutes to find her!
The patient was unhurt and awake, but she was dehydrated and a little disoriented because she was outside for hours. She said she was lying on the ground for the whole night because she couldn’t get up. It really is very fortunate that K-9 Maverick was able to find her.
Officer Thomas said that because of K-9 Maverick’s diligent work, the pup was praised by his colleagues and was even called the employee of the summer. We can all agree that the pup deserves the praise given to him. And of course, officer Thomas said that the pup would be given more than the usual amount of treats for his job well done. We applaud K-9 Maverick for excellent service!
