It’s incredible how some dogs rise through so much adversity and even become helpful members of society. Despite what these poor pups have gone through, they have the strong will to live life to the fullest. This is what Hudson, a Pitbull, did with his life.
Hudson’s story started when he, along with his siblings, was found by train workers in upstate New York. Their previous owner drove a nail to their paws into a wooden railroad tie. There were signs of abuse to their body and were apparently left for dead. They were merely three weeks old then.
Making people’s lives better
Unfortunately, one of the siblings did not survive their ordeal. And Hudson also had complications. The doctors could not save his paw and had to resort to amputation of the injured foot. Their story reached a broad audience, and they were called the railroad puppies.
With his one paw gone, Hudson had a very slim chance of ever regaining his mobility. But his new owner, Richard Nash, refused to stop searching for ways to help him. Richard started to look into prosthesis technology, which could help the dog move naturally. This was when they met Derrick Campana, a specialist in veterinary orthotics and prosthetics.
After meeting several times with Richard and Hudson, Derrick started designing a customized prosthetic device for the dog. They needed it to fit well, comfortable, be lightweight, yet very durable. And it was a success. After walking on it slowly and getting a feel for the device, Hudson started running and couldn’t be stopped.
They saw how eager Hudson was in living his life. And his natural sweet demeanor made him a perfect candidate for therapy training. So they did just that. Two years after he was found, Hudson had become a therapy dog.
He now frequently visits hospitals, senior facilities, and schools, bringing smiles to people who need it.
