David Foster was an Irish tourist and he was on a tour that made a stop on a remote island. During that stop, he rescued a malnourished dog.
The dog was all alone and had no one. She was malnourished, had ticks on her body, and had an ear injury.
She appeared to be in poor health and would not live for much longer. The next town was many hours distant, and the island itself has limited food resources. In addition, the annual flood of the Amazon River will soon cover the island where she dwelt.
Due to her thinness, the cruise liner passengers did not immediately recognize her as a dog when she ran up to them. Her demeanor suggested that she was pleased to see them, possibly assuming that she had found redemption. Foster begged the captain and the other passengers to let him bring the dog on board.
Foster eventually began calling the dog Negrita. She was cared for until the boat arrived at a location where a veterinarian could assist her. His first intention was to take her to Ireland, but he realized he would need to find her a temporary home while he handled the paperwork associated with international dog relocations.
He anticipated it would take only a few weeks, but it took him five months to get her medically certified and deal with the bureaucracy. Negrita was so much healthier when she finally arrived in Ireland that he almost didn’t recognize her. Foster, who discovered his dog in such poor health a few months ago, stated that he wouldn’t have believed it was the same animal if not for the severed portion of her ear.
Foster’s affection for animals was not limited to Negrita. In addition, he started Play For Strays, an initiative that distributes toys and assistance to animal rescue organizations worldwide.
