This pandemic has definitely changed our lives in more ways than one. It has affected the global economy, and it has claimed millions of lives worldwide. But apart from these, the pandemic has physically distanced us from one another. We can no longer shake hands, hug, or kiss people.
These simple acts of affection are exactly what seniors who live in nursing homes long for. Seniors are extremely vulnerable to COVID-19. So understandably, state governments in the U.S. have banned visitation at nursing homes. But the Hebrew Home in the Big Apple is turning to dogs to fill that void in their residents’ hearts.
Hebrew Home introduced drive-thru window visits and Facetime video calls so that their residents wouldn’t feel lonely, especially during the holidays. But there is a gulf between seeing and hearing your loved ones, and being able to hold and kiss them.
Although the nursing home couldn’t give in to its residents’ grievances, they found an alternative. Catherine Farrell, the Head of Therapeutic Activities, employed a couple of emotional support dogs to give their residents some love during this difficult time, and it seems to be working.
Catherine explained that having their residents pet and hug the doggos is a game-changer. It somehow satisfies their residents’ longing for their families. Of course, she made sure that these pups are bathed so that it would be safe to touch them, and Catherine herself is wearing a mask and a face shield to protect the seniors.
Once Catherine and the pups enter, people’s faces light up because they already know they are in for a treat. Catherine understands that what they are doing is key to the residents’ mental health. That’s why she plans to continue this project, especially given that nobody could tell when things will get back to normal.
