Reunions are the best. When we finally get back together with the ones we love after not seeing them for a while, you can’t help but get a warm feeling inside. This is the same way when we lose our dogs, and they finally had the opportunity to return home. For one man, things were even sweeter because he was reunited with his beloved pet, who he thought had already perished when it ran into a wildfire,
The Apple fire
California man Greg Skeens was getting worried about his home because of the spreading of the Apple fire in Riverside County. He could see the fire was getting nearer his property, and it was growing very fast.
As the fire grew, animals living near the area started to escape and run towards human dwellings. One day, a coyote wandered near Greg’s home, and his dog, Buck, saw it and was intrigued. He started chasing the coyote, which was three times its size. Despite that, the Blue Heeler was relentless.
Then, the coyote ran back towards the wildfire, and Buck was right behind its heels. Greg couldn’t do anything as he watched his dog get smaller on the horizon. He immediately lost hope for Buck. He would either be engulfed by the flames or the coyote and its pack would eat him.
28,000 acres
In just a matter of five days, the Apple fire scorched 28,000 acres. Firefighters from Orange County worked hard day in and out, trying to contain the spreading flames. Then, during all the chaos happening around them, one of the firefighters saw a dog walking along the fields. He seemed lost but basically unharmed.
They tried to ask around for his owner, but no one knew who he belonged to. So they decided to surrender him to animal control.
When animal control officers went around the neighborhood to ask pet owners if they have sufficient food and water for their animals, one of them met Greg. He told them about his lost dog, and they realized that the dog they found might be Buck.
So they took the dog from their office and brought it to Greg’s home. The two were so happy to be back with each other. The two hugged and gave each other kisses. Greg said that he never thought that he would see his dog again and is so grateful that authorities have returned the Blue heeler back to him.
