In South Korea, a woman found a female puppy inside a box in front of a grocery store. It was a dreary and freezing cold day in December, and the woman did not have the heart to leave her there. So she decided to rescue her.
The Good Samaritan brought the puppy home to her mother and asked if she wanted to take care of her. The older woman gladly took her in. She was feeling a bit lonely because her previous pet had passed away.
Grandma decided to name the puppy Byul. For the next eight years, Grandma poured all her love on little Byul. She cooked her special meals and kept her comfortable.
They kept each other company every day. Grandma could not bear to part with Byul. When she was in the hospital, she asked permission from the doctor to go home and check on her beloved dog.
However, Byul’s behavior suddenly changed. She did not want anybody touching her belly or her bottom part. Grandma was upset because Byul became aggressive. As a result, Grandma could not hold her and bathe her properly.
Grandma needed help, so an animal behaviorist named Lee Chan Jong came over to help her. The first thing he did was find out what event brought about the changed behavior.
It turned out that when Byul was neutered, something went wrong after the procedure. She was in so much pain, so the vet had to visit her at home to treat her. This event traumatized Byul. She did not want anybody to touch her belly even though she had completely healed from the procedure.
Lee Chan Jong told Grandma that she needed to replace that traumatic memory with good ones. They had to train Byul to get used to cuddles and belly rubs. First, she would need to wear a muzzle to prevent hurting herself and others. Next, Grandma would have to take her on her lap and keep giving her belly rubs until her growling stopped.
Grandma made a little progress, and Byul was comfortable with her touch. She did not get aggressive even when Grandma removed her muzzle. Grandma was very happy because she was able to carry and hold Byul again after a very long time.
Lee Chan Jong reminded Grandma that the training should be continuous. If not, Byul would go back to her aggressive self. Grandma promised to do everything the animal behaviorist taught her because she wanted to be as close as possible to her beloved dog.
