One night, Michelle Medina from Gillette, Wyoming let their two dogs out in the yard so that they can do their business. The family never got worried that they would run away because their property was fenced in.
But then, they suddenly heard the metal chainlink on their fence create a series of crashing sounds. As it turned out, there was a broken portion, and the two dogs were able to squeeze themselves out.
Wakiya, their two-year-old Boxer-Boston Terrier mix, and Kels, a three-year-old Pit Bull, were long gone when they got out to see what was happening.
Community as one
That night Michelle and her family combed their neighborhood, frantically searching for their beloved pets. But even after spending a couple of hours shouting their name and knocking on neighbor’s doors, the dogs were nowhere to be found. They knew that they needed help.
The Medina family started getting in touch with their friends. They posted their lost dogs on Facebook, and they even joined several groups, hoping that someone would see Wakiya and Kels.
As the days passed by, they received several reports of sightings, But every time they arrived in the area, the dogs were gone. They got more worried when they realized that the reports on the dogs stated that they were not together. Most of the time, Wakiya was seen all alone.
The Medina family stepped up their search and spent numerous hours going around their area. They were tireless in giving out flyers and putting up posters. The community noticed how dedicated they were in finding their pets and they organized their own search parties.
Found
Kel was the first one to be found. 26 days after the small pooch ran away, she walked into a home after the owner called her own dogs in. The family was thrilled to have one of their pups back. But of course, they were still worried for poor Wakiya.
But then, several days after that, while going around after shopping, they saw Wakiya in someone’s yard. Michelle and her daughter got out of the car and started running towards their pet. Wakiya got startled and ran away again.
The property owner said that she has seen the dog there several times. After talking things over, they decided to set up a trap. The very next day, Wakiya was caught.
It was a horrific month for the Medinas. But thanks to their dedication and love for their dogs, and with the help of the community, the lost pups are now back safely with their family.
