Can a dog become a professional surfer? For many, that sounds a tall order. But for a woman named Sophia Sadlowski, it is possible. And it already happened!
When Sadlowski initially put her miniature pinscher named Rusty on a surfboard, she only expected to get some cute photos. But every time they went to the beach, Rusty would jump back on the board. Little did Sadlowski know that this would be the start of her dog’s passion for surfing.
Surf’s up for this pup
When Sadlowski noticed that Rusty wanted to be on the surfboard, she tried to push the pup into a few waves. She was then thrilled to find out that Rusty was able to keep himself steady on the board despite the waves.
Sadlowski, a resident of California, said that she didn’t have to train Rusty at all. Apparently, the tiny dog had it all figured out.
Eventually, Rusty joined a surfing contest for dogs in San Diego. There, the tiny pup won third place. Over the next few years, he actually won more trophies. Alongside these achievements was the development of Rusty’s surfing skills, as he was able to surf taller and more powerful waves.
According to Sadlowski, Rusty got so much joy out of surfing. It also made her happy to see her dog doing what he loved.
How Rusty helped Sadlowski cope with life’s challenges
When Sadlowski planned to adopt Rusty, her mom was gravely ill. She told her about her plans to take Rusty in. Before she passed away, Sadlowski’s mom said she was happy that her daughter had found a new friend.
Sadlowski said that Rusty was her last connection to her mother. It was actually the pup who changed her life in more ways than she could count. Rusty encouraged Sadlowski to go outside and start doing exciting and fun things after her mom’s death. It was also the dog who inspired her to cope with life’s hardships and stress.
