A woman from a small village near Seoul, South Korea traveled to the mountains to enjoy the crisp autumn air. As she strolled down a scenic trail, she observed a Golden Retriever swimming in a canal nearby. She was quite surprised to see a dog in the canal but she chose to approach it to see if it was doing alright.
But the dog became terrified upon seeing her and hid in a sewer pipe. The woman called him and urged him to come out, but the dog refused. He remained hidden and refused to reappear.
Concerned for the dog’s safety, the woman returned the next morning with a bowl of food. She was surprised to see two Golden Retrievers, a male and a female.
She fed them every day for a month in an effort to gain their trust, but she was unable to approach them. They only consumed the meal she offered after she had left.
The compassionate woman took the time to look for assistance and eventually got in contact with a local rescue organization. She reported her findings to the rescuers and led them to the scene. She provided them with all the necessary information about the dogs and assisted them in devising a plan to catch them.
To prevent the dogs from escaping, the rescuers blocked every potential entrance and exit. They then used food to coax the dogs out of their hiding place and into a transport box. Despite chaotic moments, the rescuers were able to secure both dogs safely.
The woman wept as she observed the rescue of the dogs. She recognized it was the last time she would see them, but she was relieved to know they were finally in safe hands.
The dogs were placed in a foster home and trained and rehabilitated by an animal behaviorist. Both of them conquered their great fear of humans, but the female Golden Retriever need constant reassurance from his brother. Because he was her source of strength, they had to always be together. A family graciously volunteered to adopt them both.
The Golden Retrievers continued on from their foster home to their forever home. They began their new lives as Mango and Apple. Even more fortunate was the fact that they no longer needed to spend a single second inside a dirty sewer pipe.
