Dogfighting is inhumane and illegal. However, many underground dogfighting rings are still operating all over the country. It’s hard to believe that people are capable of such cruelty to animals who only want to be a part of a family.
Many dogs rescued from dogfighting rings are euthanized because of the amount of trauma they experience. Thankfully, law enforcement agencies and animal rescue organizations are working together to put an end to dogfighting rings and help rehabilitate the dogs that they rescue.
On Long Island, New York, a Pit Bull mix named Wish was rescued from a dogfighting ring. He was frightened of people and had no idea how to act like a dog. Wish had never been used in a dogfighting match before, but he was kept in a cramped cage along with several other dogs that were already violent and aggressive.
After Wish was rescued, he needed to go to a behavioral rehabilitation facility in North Carolina to recover. The goal was to help him realize that not all humans and dogs are going to hurt him. Wish was a naturally kind and loving dog who wanted nothing more than to play with people.
However, he had trouble adjusting to new environments and would immediately shut down whenever he was exposed to something he wasn’t familiar with. Animal behaviorists and therapists worked with him every day to help him come out of his shell.
Thanks to their hard work and patience, Wish started to trust humans more and gained confidence. He no longer feared new places and would even get excited whenever he was taken out on walks. Wish was eventually sent to a foster home, where he could experience living with a family.
Wish thrived in his foster home. He loved getting attention from his foster parents, and he even befriended a cat. After adjusting to a home environment, he was finally ready to find his forever home.
Wish was adopted by a couple named Mike and Lauren. The couple were looking to adopt another dog after one of their dogs passed away. When Mike and Lauren learned about Wish, they didn’t hesitate to apply for his adoption. They knew that Wish would be a perfect fit for their family.
Mike and Lauren drove 11 hours to meet Wish and take him back home. That kind of commitment shows just how serious they were about giving Wish a loving forever home. Soon after getting Wish home, Mike and Lauren introduced him to his new doggie siblings and became friends with them.
Wish is finally getting the life he deserves. He’s now spending his days playing with his doggie siblings and cuddling with his new parents. He enjoys going on regular walks and adventures with his new family as well as getting belly rubs and treats from them. Here’s a video featuring Wish’s story that will surely make you believe in miracles.
